The Icelandic Transport Authority is a government agency working under the Ministry of Transport and Local Government.  The Icelandic Transport Authority is mainly responsible for road traffic safety and everything regarding vehicle registration, including assisting the Ministry in all matters concerning vehicle registration, type approval and vehicle inspection. The Icelandic Transport Authority also operates a computer central that hosts the vehicle registration database, Tachograph database and a comprehensive road traffic accidents database.

The Icelandic Transport Authority is the Type Approval Authority in Iceland. The NorType project is a cooperation between Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland, takes place in Iceland. The purpose of the NorType project, which started in the beginning of year 2000, is to have a common registration of European Whole Vehicle Type Approval Information, and to distribute it to participating countries, over the Internet, through a password protected website or via XML.
